First Toa Payoh Primary is the result of the merger of four primary schools – Braddell Primary, San Shan Primary, Westlake Primary and the former First Toa Payoh Primary. Merged in 2002 and under the leadership of Miss Rosalind Chia, the school has forged a common identity over the past 6 years. 2009 sees the change of leadership as Miss Chia retired from the service at the end of Dec 2008. I am indeed honoured to take over the helm from Miss Chia as the newly-appointed principal. I am grateful for the good work done by Miss Chia and her team in moving the four merged schools as one over the years. It is now my duty to continue the good work done by my predecessor and together with the team bring the school to the next level of achievement.

The future before us is one which is rapidly changing and complex, where technological advances are a daily occurrence, thus innovation remains critical. Our pupils must learn to be independent yet civic-minded, critical and creative thinkers yet caring individuals. The school has attained the Character Development Award (DA) and this bears testimony to our belief that the school places high stakes in the character development of every child in the school.

Building the Capacity of our Pupils

Aligning to the vision of the school, we aim to provide a holistic education for our pupils through the provision of quality academic and co-curricular programmes. The lower primary years see our pupils engaged in meaningful learning through the integration of cognitive, communication and technological skills necessary for a globalised world. Through cooperative learning, our pupils learn to collaborate and hone their social skills so that they can connect with the world of the future. The upper primary pupils on the other hand are engaged in an inquiry-based environment where social skills remain essential and the ability to communicate effectively is further emphasized.

A Holistic and Balanced Curriculum

The vibrancy of the school and its students is not measured by its academic achievements but also the talents which the school aims to nurture. Here at First Toa Payoh Primary, all our pupils have the opportunity to express themselves through the arts–Visual or Performing. We take great pride in our pupils’ artistic talents and a walk through the corridors in the school will reveal the artistic talents of our pupils. Our pupils are exposed to a structured Arts programme where they will learn not only to create but to appreciate the arts. Involving our pupils to experience the arts through music and dance is another focus for our pupils. Teachers specializing in Arts are specially employed to inspire our pupils so that they will develop a passion for the Arts and have in them an avenue for creative self expression.

Building the Capacity of our staff

We believe that the teacher is key in the development of our pupils. Anchored in this belief, First Toa Payoh Primary builds the innovative capacity of our teachers through collaboration at platforms like the learning circles or communities where teachers are encouraged to participate in action research and take a lead in professional sharing.

Building Bridges with Our Partners

We build firm ties with our partners- in- education. The Parents’ Support Group is strong and their active involvement with school programmes have benefited all at First Toa Payoh Primary. Through our network with the community and our active involvement with various self–help groups and organizations, the learning of our pupils is enhanced. We will continue to look for partners-in-education so as to value- add to our school programmes.
